Bringing the work behind every filming location into one workspace
Location managers and scouts spend years building an archive of photos, notes, permits, and contacts. Each new production should benefit from that work. But with material scattered across Dropbox folders, SmugMug galleries, email threads, and presentation decks, even finding what already exists can be a challenge.
Teams rebuild location selections for each project, while feedback is scattered across calls, chats, and PDFs. Past scouting work becomes difficult to reuse, and decisions become difficult to track.
Working with Massif’s founding team — producers, location managers, and engineers building from firsthand industry experience — we designed a platform around how location work actually happens:
- A private database that keeps location material organized and reusable
- Natural-language search to find relevant images across the archive
- Tools to quickly turn locations into presentation-ready selections
- A shared workspace for shortlisting, commenting, and deciding together
The result was one connected workflow, from finding locations to deciding together — a vision that brought four production companies on board as development partners ahead of launch.

Understanding the location work
We talked with location managers, scouts, and producers to understand how they work today and where the process breaks down
Product definition
We reframed the product around a clear need: a shared workspace that connects a team’s location database with how they find, present, and review locations
Product design and prototyping
We designed and prototyped the core workflows for each role, from location managers organizing their archives to producers and directors reviewing selections
Concept validation
We tested the concept with more than 50 producers and 20 location scouts, confirming demand for the platform
Location database
Photos, videos, contacts, notes, and permit details — all connected to the location they belong to. We designed a private database that brings scattered material together and makes past scouting work easier to reuse.
Search the way you think
“The white villa with blue doors from last summer’s shoot.” We designed a search experience that lets teams describe what they remember — or what they’re looking for — and find relevant images across their archive in seconds.
From feedback to final choice
We brought comments, votes, and shortlists into the workspace, keeping feedback attached to each location. Location managers, producers, and directors can review options together and keep track of decisions.
